It is a picturesque place of high cliffs eroded in granites of Mesozoic age, creating a wonderful landscape of granite "tors".
Precious stones have been mined for over 100 years. In 1960, a huge crystal of clear quartz was found at the Gorchi deposit.
The area of the National Park covers 2,864 square kilometers and protected by the State since 1993. There are several traditional gher tourist camps in the valley of the Terelj, Tuul river.
Buddhist Temple of Gunj Soum: The temple is in distance of 30 kilometers northeast of the main Terelj Tourist camp and in the middle of the Gorkhi-Terelj National Park. The burial temple and a marble monument were erected built in 1740 in honor of Dondovdorj's princess who was murdered by Manchu people displeased with her.
Horse riding: Terelj is a good place to climb up to rock cliffs and ride Mongolian short horses. You can have 2-3 days horse trekking in the beautiful forest of the National Park and stay in a tent in the wild world.
Khagiin Khar Lake: Further to mouth of Dundbayan river from Terelj National Park, there is a beautiful lake Khagiin Khar between the Khiidiin Saridag Mountain and Lake Khunkher Uul and Asgat Saridag of Khan Khentii Mountain Range. The water of the lake is about 25-30 meters deep and the surface is at an altitude of 1,800 meters above sea level, covering an area of about 4 square kilometers. The lake formed as a result of glacial action, which occurred during the Quaternary Era, in very recent geological times. Reaching Khagiin Khar lake needs a local guide familiar with these mountains, high-scale maps as the route is not for the faint-hearted and requires mountaineering skills, correct camping kit, clothing and rations for the entire trip.
Yestiin hot Spring: Its temperature is 34°C and is in the valley of the Yestii river, a tributary of Yeroo river. The spring water contains bicarbonate, sodium carbonate and sulphuretted-hydrogen, and is used to treat extremities, nervousness and other diseases. |
