Note: At present, there are problems reported on buying
train tickets to Ulaanbaatar for the Trans-Mongolia train. Although the
trains certainly stop in Ulaanbaatar, tickets are only being sold to Chinese
or Russian destinations. Therefore, a passenger wishing to travel from
Beijing to Ulaanbaatar will have to pay for a ticket to Ulaan Ude, just over
the Russian border. The other trains between Moscow and Ulaanbaatar, and
Beijing and Ulaanbaatar are unaffected.
How to get to & from the airport and railway station: Our Company is
responsible for the transportation from and to the points you arrive and
depart. In case if you would like to arrange it on your own, the best way to
get to the centre of Ulaanbaatar is via taxi. Taxis serve you safely at 250 MNT per kilometer. If there are no taxis available, then you can flag down a
non-taxi car. The cost of these non-taxi journeys is MNT 250-300 per
kilometer.
Getting Around: Our Company will arrange your transportation within the
country during your travel at your request of interests like air, train,
four-wheel drive, camels or horses to the extent of existing services as the
transport network is poorly developed in the country.
Accommodation: Rooms of deluxe, semi-deluxe, first class and tourist
categories are available at the main hotels in Ulaanbaatar and Mongolian Gerh (round felt tents traditionally used by nomadic herders) at the tourist
camps. There are also many smaller hotels, guest-houses and hostels of
varying standards. Outside the capital, hotels are basic and few in number.
Tipping is optional.
Tourists who want to stay under the open sky have the opportunity to camp
almost anywhere except some places in protected areas that require special
permission. Our company will arrange camping for you.
Food: The number of foreign cuisine restaurants is increasing. Some of the
better ones are: Taj Mahal or Hazara (Indian) Seoul (Korean), Pizza de la
Casa (Italian), Casablanca (Singaporean), Anujin (Chinese), Sapphire Thai,
Los Bandidos (Mexican/Indian). Millie's café is best for lunches. Sachers
café and Chez Benard are good for coffees and cakes.
It is also possible to eat reasonably well in the main hotels. General
standard of cuisine is reasonable, but the options for vegetarians are few
in Ulaanbaatar and almost nil in the countryside. The price of a meal
without alcohol ranges from US$5 to US$20. Tipping is optional.
Entertainments: Classic and national opera, ballet, folk concert and circus
are main evening entertainments offered to tourists. Visits to evening
entertainments are possible during the weekends. Ulaanbaatar has a thriving
night life with a number of very lively night clubs, pubs, and dance clubs.
Shopping: Mongolia is the best place to cashmere products: sweaters, gloves,
scarves, dresses, blankets, etc. As the country is one the worlds leading
producers of raw cashmere it offers very competitive prices as well as good
design and quality.
Variety of art crafts is of interest to foreign travelers. Mongolia has a
unique nomadic culture and arts/culture became one of its largest export
items.
Medical services are limited, especially so in the countryside. All
necessary expenses connected with medical treatment are to be paid by
patient. Bring any necessary medications other than painkillers and drugs
for high temperature with you and keep them in your hand luggage.
Photographing: Some museums do not permit photographing near the exhibits.
At the time you are entering, inquire as to whether or not photographing is
allowed. Mongolians are usually very amiable when photographing; however,
ask your tour guide or someone else in authority if it is acceptable to take
a photo.
Passport and Visa: Every tourist entering Mongolia must be in possession of
a passport valid at least for 6 months from date of entry into Mongolia.
Travelers must have a Mongolian visa, except when bilateral arrangements
provide for waiver of visa requirement. You may apply for visa at the
diplomatic or consular mission of Mongolia in your country or in a location
closest to you. Please,
click here to see the contact addresses of the
Mongolian Embassies and Missions abroad or please,
information on visa requirements. Visa may be obtained at the airport at a
cost of around US$50 and must be accompanied by an invitation letter from an
organizing tour company.
Travelers arriving or departing Mongolia through China or Russia should also
be aware of Chinese or Russian visa regulations.
Customs: Every tourist must complete a customs declaration form which should
be retained until departure. Import and re-export of articles intended for
personal use for duration of stay is allowed. It is prohibited to import and
export:
guns, weapons and ammunition without special permission
-
explosive items
-
radioactive substance
-
opium, hashish and other narcotics
-
pornographic publications
-
publications, records, films, paleontological and archeological findings,
collection of various plants and their seeds, birds, wild and domestic
animals, raw skins and hides and furs without permission of appropriate
Mongolian authorities.
Some information on your safety while you are in Mongolia: Mongolia is
considered as a relatively safe country for travelers. However, to reduce
the risk of becoming a victim of crime, exercise the same precautions that
you would in any unknown city.
Over the past few years there has been a significant rise in crime in
Mongolia, particularly in Ulaanbaatar, the capital. Violent crime is
increasing, and it is no longer advisable to walk alone through the city
after dark. The most common crimes against foreigners are pick pocketing and
bag-snatching. Travelers should be especially cautious when taking public
transportation, and in crowded public areas such as markets, the State
Department Store, the Central Post Office, Gandan Monastery, and the
so-called Black Market. |
